Open Space and Recreation

The Open Space & Recreation Committee (OSRC) seeks to provide recreational activities as well as access to Petersham’s many conservation properties and open spaces.  The Committee also works with property owners and land protection organizations to protect the town’s most important lands. The work of the Committee is guided by the town’s Open Space & Recreation Plan completed in 2024. For the health and wellbeing of town residents, we endeavor to provide opportunities for outdoor activities, exercise, and recreation that enhance our community.

Recreational Activities

  • Pick-up Basketball on Tuesdays in the Center School gym from 6:30 to 8:30 pm
  • Ping Pong on Wednesdays in the Town Hall from 11:30 to 12:30 pm
  • Pickleball on Fridays in the Center School gym from 6:00 to 8:00 pm
  • Badminton and Cornhole on Friday afternoons on the Common during Friday Markets.

Current Projects

The OSRC is currently pursuing two projects: (1) create an all-persons walking trail on the town’s property at 25 Common Street; and (2) improve the sidewalks in the town center which is a popular walking circuit. We have also been working on laying out and marking the Bob Marshall trail in the north part of town and on clearing and marking trails in the town’s Babbitt Wildlife Sanctuary in the south part of town. There is interest in potentially pursuing other projects such as creating trails on the town’s Davenport property, developing an outside pickleball court, and organizing pond skating opportunities.  We are always looking for volunteers to help!

Outdoor Activities

There are many opportunities for hiking, biking, cross country skiing and other outdoor activities in Petersham. The OSRC’s top five recommended hikes are:

  • Soapstone Mountain in Quabbin
  • Brooks Woodland Preserve
  • Swift River Reservation
  • Harvard Pond
  • Rutland Brook
The official Town Website will launch on Friday, April 17th.
